Frequently Asked Questions about Piano Lessons

  • What age should you start piano lessons?
There is no correct age to begin piano lessons. Some students begin as early as 4. It is the teacher's preference what age they start teaching. I start students when they are in Senior Kindergarden. At this point they have learned how to write the alphabet and numbers and are confortable sitting for their piano lesson.
  • Do I need a piano at home?
Yes! Students need to have an instrument whether it be a piano or digital piano at home that they are able to practice on. Very quickly, students become frustrated and fail to continue when they do not have the ability to adequately practice.
  • How long does my child need to practice each day?
There is not one definitive practicing schedule that teacher's use for their students as every student is unique in their learning. Elementary students for example do not need to sit at the piano for long period's of time. They can work through their pieces in as little as 10 minutes per day. I work with each student on an individual basis to create a practice routine. Practicing regularly, even it if’s a short time each day will allow students to reinforce what they have been learning and progress through their studies with more confidence. I recommend that parents sit with thier child during the early years of piano lessons so they are able to monitor their practicing and ensure that they are working through their homework as assigned. Starting Guide to Practicing: Young students and beginners: 10-20 minutes a day Elementary students: 20-30 minutes a day Intermediate students: 30-45 minutes a day Advanced students: 45-60 minutes a day
  • What books are used and how do I get them?

Becuase every student is unique and their learning styles are their own, I have multiple method books in my library that I use to suppliment as needed. My most commonly used methods include: My First Piano Adventures Piano Adventures Alfred's Basic Piano Library Bastien Piano Basics As books are required you can purchase them directly through me or you can find them online.
